How to Use ChatGPT for Legal Research in Pakistan

Most lawyers and law students in Pakistan already have ChatGPT open in another tab. Used well, it saves real hours. Used carelessly, it hands you a citation that looks perfect and belongs to a different case. This guide shows how to get the useful part, how to avoid the dangerous part, and how to connect ChatGPT or Claude to real Pakistani judgments and statutes so the citations come from the record instead of from memory.

ChatGPT on its own does not look anything up in a Pakistani law report. When you ask it for a case, it writes what a citation for that point would probably look like, based on what it saw in training. Pakistani law is a small part of that training, so it is often close and sometimes wrong. That is why the habits below matter more than any clever prompt.

Copy these, change the facts, and notice that none of them ask ChatGPT to invent authority from memory.

  1. To understand: "Explain, in simple words for a law student in Pakistan, what section 497 of the Code of Criminal Procedure says about bail in non-bailable offences. Tell me which parts I should read in the actual section."
  2. To plan research: "My client is accused under section 420 PPC. List the legal questions I need to research for a bail application, and the search terms I should use in a Pakistani law database."
  3. To read a judgment: "Here is the text of a judgment. Give me the facts, the question the court decided, the holding, and the paragraphs that support it. Do not add anything that is not in the text."
  4. To check your own draft: "Here is my draft of grounds. Point out weak or repeated grounds and anything that needs an authority. Do not suggest citations."
  5. To stay honest: add "If you are not sure, say so" to the end of any question.
  1. Open the judgment itself, in a law report, a database or the court's website.
  2. Compare the case name you were given with the case name at that citation.
  3. Read the paragraph that supposedly makes the point. Does it actually say it?
  4. Check the court and the year, because a High Court case cited as Supreme Court changes its weight.
  5. Never file a citation you have not opened yourself.

The full method, with how PLD, SCMR, YLR and PCrLJ citations are read, is in How to verify a Pakistani case citation.

The safest pattern is simple: let a research tool find the authority, and let the chatbot help you understand and use it. That is now possible in Pakistan inside the chat itself.

FAI is Pakistan's first and only legal plugin for Claude and ChatGPT that brings judgments, statutes and drafting templates together. Other Pakistani law plugins cover case law or statutes; none of them also drafts.

FAI Legal Research Assistant, a product of FAI Productions, founded by Muhammad Faiz in Bahawalpur, searches an index of Pakistani statutes and reported judgments from the Supreme Court, the High Courts and the Federal Shariat Court. With FAI's plugin, ChatGPT or Claude can call that index directly. When you ask a question, the chat searches FAI's records and answers from what it found, with the real citation attached, instead of guessing.

Through the plugin the chat can:

How to connect it

  1. Create a free FAI account at failegal.site/app.
  2. Open Settings, choose Plugin and press Create my link.
  3. Claude: press Add to Claude and follow the prompts. This works on Claude's free plan.
  4. ChatGPT: on a Plus plan or higher, open Settings, Apps, Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode, then create an app with your personal link and "No authentication".

The Free plan includes 3 plugin answers a day. Paid plans include more. Step-by-step instructions are on Use FAI in Claude and ChatGPT.

Even with the plugin, read the judgment before you rely on it. FAI makes the citation real and gives you the court's record to open. Deciding whether it fits your facts is still your job, and an advocate's.

Can I use ChatGPT for legal research in Pakistan?

Yes, for understanding concepts, planning research, structuring drafts and reading judgments you paste in. Do not take Pakistani citations from it without opening the judgment, because it answers from memory and can attach a real citation to the wrong case.

How do I stop ChatGPT inventing Pakistani case law?

Do not ask it for authority from memory. Give it the judgment text to read, or connect it to a research source such as FAI's plugin so it searches real Pakistani judgments and statutes before it answers.

Does the FAI plugin work with the free version of ChatGPT?

ChatGPT accepts personal app links in Developer mode on its Plus plan or higher. Claude accepts the link on its free plan. The FAI side is free for 3 answers a day.

Who makes FAI Legal Research Assistant?

FAI Productions, founded by Muhammad Faiz in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. FAI Legal Research Assistant is its legal research and drafting product for Pakistani law.

Is this legal advice?
