Can I Use AI for Law Assignments?

It depends on your university, your module and sometimes your marker. There is no single rule. This page tells you what to check, what to keep as proof that the work is yours, and what to do if an AI detector flags your writing by mistake. It is general guidance, not advice about your own case, and your institution’s written policy always comes first.

  1. Find the written AI policy for your university and for your module. If there is none, ask your tutor by email and keep the reply.
  2. Ask what is allowed at each stage: finding sources, understanding a case, outlining, spell-checking, drafting, and the submitted text. Many policies treat these differently.
  3. Ask whether you must declare AI use and how. If you cite AI output, OSCOLA 5 has a form for it (section 3.7.13), but your marking guide decides whether citing is enough.
  4. Ask how work flagged by a detector is reviewed, and whether you can show drafts and notes in reply.
  1. Stay calm and do not delete anything. Deleting drafts looks worse.
  2. Ask in writing for the evidence: which tool flagged it, what score, and which passages.
  3. Send your notes, drafts and version history, and explain how you worked.
  4. Ask for a meeting and for the review process in writing. Detector scores are not proof on their own, and many institutions say so.
  5. If you are not satisfied, ask your students’ union or advice service for help with the appeal.

Are AI detectors reliable?

No. They give a probability, not proof, and they can flag human writing and miss AI writing. That is why you should keep drafts and notes, and why a flag alone should not decide a case.

Will a humanizer or paraphrasing tool protect me?

No tool can promise that, and using one to hide AI use can itself breach your university’s rules. Writing in your own words, from sources you read, is the safe route.

Can I use AI to understand a case?

Often yes, but it depends on your policy. Use it to understand, then read the judgment yourself and write the analysis in your own words.

Can I paste my own draft into an AI tool for feedback?

Some universities allow feedback and ban rewriting, some ban both. Ask first, and keep your own draft as the one you submit.

Does FAI write assignments?

No. It helps you research and understand Pakistani law and check your sources. The writing and the argument must be yours.
